The use of medicinal and aromatic plants is as old as the human civilization. Our country has a glorious tradition of health care system based on plants.
During the past decade, traditional systems of medicine i.e. Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH), which is based on the medicinal and aromatic plants, has become a topic of global importance. Current estimations suggest that in many developing countries a large proportion of the population relies heavily on traditional practitioners and medicinal plants to meet primary health care needs. Although modern medicinal may be available in these countries, herbal medicines (Phytomedicines) have often maintained popularity for historical and cultural reasons. Concurrently, many people in developed countries have begun to turn to alternative or complementary therapies, including medicinal herbs due to safety and effective treatments.
Our herbal industries are getting 80% of the total raw material from our forest. In addition to this the large scale, cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants such as - Isabgol, Senna, Henna, Guar, Ashwagandha, Kalihari, Safed musli, Mulethi, Ghritkumari, Milk Thistle, Coleous, Lemongrass, Pamarossa, Mint, Basil etc. have been started.
Medicinal and aromatic plants market in the country is today unorganized due to several problems such as irregular supply of raw material, lack of information, poor quality of raw material and too much adulteration, that is why India is unable to stand on the international parameters.
Today proper co-ordination and interaction among Indian farmers, pharmaceutical and all stack holders of medicinal and aromatic plants sector is required, so that India can get a proper status in International Market. To achieve this goal 'Asian Medicinal Plants and Health Care Trust, Jodhpur' has under taken a project of making this type of directory named "A Marketing Directory of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants".
