ABOUT THE BOOK

This book is a compilation work and embodies a fairly comprehensive information of the fundamental aspects of diabetes, herbal based antidiabetic research and antidiabetic plants in India. This book will promote research aspirations in botanists and particularly beginners in the area of medical botany. It also provides information to the pharmacy students and researchers in identifying antidiabetic agents from natural resource and in standardizing herbal formulations/crude drugs. It provides information briefly about the important work done in antidiabetic research and a detailed account on the work done during 1995 to 2002 encompassing more than 200 references.
This book also provides brief information about diabetes, especially pertaining to NIDDM; different antidiabetic agents and management of NIDDM. Information about animal models used in the screening of plant extracts, experimental protocols in antidiabetic research is also given in detail.
This book also offers information about the antidiabetic plants available in India, brief description about the plant, it's distribution in India, flowering fruiting season, vernacular names, methods of propagation with a brief account of the herbal use in treating diabetes.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR'S

1. Prof. T. Pullaiah obtained his M.Sc., (1973) and Ph.D., (1976) degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia during 1976-78. He travelled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanical Gardens in about 16 countries. Professor Pullaiah joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as a Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. At present he is Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences; Head, Department of Botany; Coordinator and Chairman BOS in Biotechnology.
Professor Pullaiah has pulblished 25 books, 175 research papers and 35 popular articles. His books include Embryology of Compositae; Flora of Andhra Pradesh (4 Vols.); Trees of Andhra Pradesh;
Taxonomy of Angiosperms; Flora of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India; Flora of Ranga Reddi District; Flora of Anantapur District, Flora of Kurnool;
Flora of Nizamabad; Embryology and Apomixis in Grasses; Flora of Eastern Ghats—Vol. 1 and Vol.2;
Biodiversity in India—Vol. 1; etc. He is principal investigator of 14 major Research Projects total-ling more than 70 lakhs funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, DOEF, GCC and WWF. Under his guidance 35 stu¬dents obtained their Ph.D. degree and 32 students obtained their M.Phil. degree.
He is recipient of Best Teacher Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh and receipient of Panchanan Maheshwari Medal of Indian Botanical Society for the year 2002 and Y.D. Tyagi Gold Medal of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy. He is a Member of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
2. Dr. K. Chandrasekhar Naidu obtained his M.Sc. (1977) and Ph.D. (1982) from Andhra University. He is a faculty member in the Department of Botany since 1987. He is an active member of various academic and research associations and participated in several conferences/symposia/seminars. Four Ph.D. degrees and 6 M.Phil, degrees have been awarded under his guidance. He has completed two UGC, one DST and one USA based international research project on phytochemical and pharmacological screening for antidiabetic agents and has published more than 40 research papers in national and international journals.
