The book 'Ayurvedic Drug Plants' contains information on more than 225 common plants, which are used frequently in ayurvedic system of medicine. These plants are arranged under their ayurvedic names or popular names. Each plant has been provided its common names in different languages to make their identification locally easier. in various parts of the country. Besides, the description for each plant with its distribution notes, information on parts used and medicinal uses is given. The experiences of tribal people or of those, who are residing in the interior parts of the country, are discussed under folk uses of the plants. Plant nomenclature is updated to avoid any doubt in plant species, leading a wrong identification of the plant. Wherever available, the latest information on chemical constitutes of each plant species is also provided. Appendices on Classical Ayurvedic Formulas and some Modern Ayurvedic Formulas, which are mostly used in ayurvedic system of medicine, are given along with the appendix on the Addresses of Ayurvedic Pharmaceuticals Concerns, from where the ayurvedic proprietary medicines could be purchased. Besides, an appendix on Glossary of Medical Terms is also appended to enhance the knowledge of general people about the common medical terms.
This is hoped that this book will be useful for research workers interested in carrying out the researches in the field of ayurveda or medicinal uses of the plants, medical students, the students of botany and the persons engaged in pharmaceutical concerns. Besides, this book will be equally useful for the general laymen interested in knowing the mystery of plant world, particularly their uses in the field of medicine.
Dr. Anil Kumar Dhiman, born in 1965, is M.A. (Political Science), M.Sc. (Botany), M.L.I.Sc., B.Ed., P.G.D.C.A., Ph.D. and the Ayurved Ratan. He is Elected Fellow of Indian Botanical Society (FBS), Fellow of Society of Ethnobotanists (FES) and Fellow of United Writers Association of India (FUWAI) and also the life-members of Academy of Plant Sciences of India (APSI), Indian Library Association (ILA), Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres (IASLIC), Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS), Uttar Pradesh Library Association, (UPLA) Lucknow and Uttaranchal Pustakalaya Association (UPA). His Doctorate work is based on Medicinal Flora of Haridwar District, which contains information on ethno-botanical uses of the plants. He has widely travelled throughout the country. He has taught Botany to under-graduate students in Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar during 1995-96 under distance education programme. He has about two decade of working experience in the library field. Presently, he is working as Information Scientist in the Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar. He has also experience of teaching library science to the students of certificate of library science and undergraduate students at Library Science Training Centre, Roorkee and Haridwar Study Centre ofU.P. Rajrashi Tandon Open University between 1994-2001 and 2001 -2002 respectively. He had also been the Principal of Library Science Training Centre, Roorkee in 2004-05 session. He is also the President of Roorkee Branch of Uttaranchal Pustakalaya':
Association and the Editor ofUPA Newsletter, an official organ of Uttaranchal Pustakalaya Association. He has to his credit 21 books and 65 papers published in both field of his study i.e.. Botany and Library Science. He has successfully completed many short-term courses. on Bibliometrics and Library Automation. He has also attended various seminars in Botany and Library Science and also had been the member of organizing committee of seminars and conferences of national reputes. His name has been referred in various directories of national and international fames. For his contribution in Botany, he was awardedAPSI GoldMedal and Young Scientist Award in 1999.
