Export Oriented Medicinal & Aromatic Crops

India has 16 agro-climatic zones, 45000 different plant species and 15000 medicinal plants that include 7000 plants used in ayurveda, 700 in unani medicine, 600 in siddha medicine, 450 in homoeopathy and 30 in modern medicine. This make India one among 12 mega bio-diverse countries of the world and despite having only 2.5% of total land area, the country accounts for over 8% of the recorded species of the world. The Indian Systems of Medicine have identified 1500 medicinal plants, of which 500 species are commonly used in the preparation of AYUSH drugs. More than 150 plant species have been categorized as endangered. Who's forecast is that the global market for herbal products is expected to US$ 5 trillion by 2050. Herbal remedies would become increasingly important as people seek natural remedies and gentler, safer products to deal with the prevention of ill health and the promotion of good health. India, with its diversified biodiversity has tremendous potential and a natural advantage in this emerging area.
During the past decade, a dramatic increase in export of medicinal & aromatic plants attests to worldwide interest in these products as well as in traditional system of health care. In the last 10 years, india's export of medicinal & aromatic plants have became trebled.
The purpose of this book is to provide the theoretical and practical position of medicinal & aromatic plants in the world.
This book is divided in three sections:
Section I : Eco-friendly cultivation of medicinal & aromatic crops;
Section II : Export data (2003) of selected medicinal & aromatic crops and
Section III : Export promotion organizations and their activities.
