This book gives an account of medicinal plants of all the countries on planet earth. Medicinal uses of more than 3000 species are given in this book. The species are arranged alphabetically. Under each plant the valid name, synonyms, family, brief description (for identification), distribution in the World and India, flowering and fruiting season, Sanskrit name, local names, trade name, medicinal uses and chemistry are given. For many medicinal plants detailed propagation methods have also been given. Chemical structures of some important compounds are given. Line drawings of more than 500 plants and photographs of more than 300 plants (mostly Indian) are also given.
An extensive bibliography has been given at the end. Index to synonyms, index to Sanskrit names, index to local names, index to trade names have been given for easy location. Some important medical terms have also been provided. Information on medicinal plants trade is given. The book also includes addresses of Traders in Medicinal Plants and Pharmaceuticals (both in India and Abroad). List of plants used for different ailments are also given.
Prof. T. Pullaiah obtained his M.Sc. (1973) and Ph.D. (1976) degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia during 1976-78. He traveled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanical Gardens in about 16 countries. Professor Pullaiah joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. He held several positions in the University which include Dean, Faculty of, Life Sciences, Head of the Department of Botany, Chairman, BOS in Botany, Head of the Department of Sericulture, Co-Ordinator and Chairman BOS Biotechnology. Prof. Pullaiah has published 33ooks, 200 research papers and 35 popular articles. His books include Medicinal Plants in India (2 Volumes), Medicinal plants in Andhra Pradesh, Antidiabetic plants in India and Herbal based Antidiabetic Research, Embryology of Compositae, Flora of Andhra Pradesh (4 volumes), Taxonomy of Angiosperms, Text book of Embryology of Angiosperms, Flora of Guntur District, Flora ofRanga Reddi District, Flora of Anantapur District, Flora of Kurnool, Flora of Nizamabad, Embryology of Apomixis in Grasses, Flora of Eastern Ghats — Vol. 1 and 2, Biodiversity in India — Vol. 1, 2 and 3, Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (3 volumes), etc. He is Principal investigator of 16 major research projects totaling more than Rs. 80 lakhs funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, UGC, GCC, WWF, BSI etc. Under his guidance 40 students obtained their Ph.D. degree and 34 students their M.Phil degree. He is recipient of Best Teacher Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh, Panchanan Maheshwari Gold Medal of Indian Botanical Society and Y.D. Tyagi Gold Medal of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy. He is Vice President of Indian Botanical Society, Member of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural resources (IUCN).
